What Lies Ahead for the ASEAN Community in 2015? Silke Vogel, PhD Associate Dean, Graduate Studies Deputy Directory, Centre of Regulatory Excellence (CoRE) Duke-NUS DIA Global Forum Regional Editor for ASEAN The ASEAN community (comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), with a population of more than 600 million, represents a rapidly growing, emerging market. As health care is gaining in importance and priority in many ASEAN member states, the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors are rapidly growing. This is reflected in regional pharmaceutical sales doubling from 2001 to 2010. Looking forward, annual average growth rates of 13% are expected by 2016. With the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) from 2015, more growth and freer trade can be expected. Looking at the list of “what lies ahead” for therapeutic innovation and regulatory science, certainly many issues of the Top 10 resonate for the ASEAN region. 46 Vol 7 Issue 2
